Swedish Bitter

It was discovered two decades ago and the Austrian phyto-therapist Maria Treben reminded it in her book "Natural Health Cures". She described it to be a cure for all types of illness. In time, it proved to be a mixture of curative herbs: its properties are good for our health. Therefore, the mixture became famous. All over the world, chemists' shops sold millions of helpings and bottles with this elixir. Swedish bitter became a symbol of renewed tradition of curative herbs. One may wonder about its origin and about which is the best type we should use? It seems to have been discovered in the Middle Age by the famous alchemist Theophrastus Bombastus Von Hohenheim, also named Paracelsus, who wanted to produce a plant elixir for prolonging youth. After a while, people forgot about it. It was transmitted from father to son, by a family of Swedish doctors, called Samst. It seemed to be really effective because all members of that family lived for a long time. Klaus Samsts, the rector of the Medical University in Uppsala, continued to use the tincture and make it famous. He lived 104 years and he died in a horse accident. Swedish bitter proved to be effective. It is used against several illnesses: indigestion, migraines, skin cancer etc. There are several kinds of tincture, besides the mixture made of 32 plants: tinctures from 16, 12, 8, as well as 180 plants.

What is Swedish bitter?

It is an hydro-alcohol extract, a tincture of bitter curative herbs. It is also called "bitter Swedish drink". It tastes bitter because most of the plants who compound it taste bitter. They are important for natural therapy. Natural bitter therapies increase the draining properties (liver and bladder), stimulate the process of eliminating toxins (by increasing the digestive peristalsis), makes digestion work due to the increased quantity of gastric juice. From a psycho-mental point of view, the bitter taste is associated to disappointment. Therefore, holistic medicine considers bitter remedies very interesting (for the psychological plan) for they eliminate false convictions and ideas. Natural medicine cannot refer to an effective process of dis intoxication without using bitter drinks. The drink contains genuine bitter herbs (gentian, centaury, artichoke-Cynara scholymus), bitter-flavoured (wormwood, milfoil, bitter orange skin), sour-salted (chicory, dandelion), bitter-mucilaginous (Iceland lichen) etc. For this reason, bitter elixir helps draining out and detoxifying human body and cures all sort of illnesses.

The best formula for Swedish bitter

Although it is very famous, we do not know its original receipt yet. Some of the components, such as Venetian theriac, are obtained by alchemical procedures which are no longer known. There is a slight possibility we should not obtain it according to the old formula, created by Paracelsus in the Middle Age. But it is still effective. It is difficult to find the answer to the question: "Which is the best receipt?" We consider any Romanian product is better than any other foreign product. How is that possible? First of all, the quality of the plants - Romanian flora is extremely rich in curative bitter and flavoured plants, with strong effectiveness. Abroad, specialists highlight the good taste of the remedy instead of the therapeutic effectiveness. Also, the concentration of active properties of the plants is bigger than those from abroad.

Home-made Swedish bitter

There is a simple receipt, composed by only 12 plants:

- add one teaspoon of fir resin powder (Abies salba), foeniculum seeds (Foeniculum vulgare), nettle root (Urtica dioica) and half teaspoon of saffron powder (Curcuma longa).
